Dagoll Dagom’s production of PYGMALION presents Rosita Fernandes, an uneducated, ignorant, passionate, suburban proletarian version of Cinderella, who becomes a bright, free and cultured woman, given the fact that she learns, with the help of Professor Jordana and the faithful Colonel Fontanella, how to possess words or, better still, language.

Which language? That is no matter. Between the nether regions of poor slang and the upper echelons of precise educated expression, there is , in all languages, a linguistic abyss separating classes and souls. Professor Jordana and Rosita try to fill that abyss, with the other cast members as onlookers. In the end they achieve a resounding victory where pupil and teacher meet on the same level: the miracle of Cinderella has been performed, or at least in part.
However, the coveted linguistic victory of PYGMALION’S leading roles doesn’t bring sentimental triumph with it. These who have achieved greatness in the world of linguistics, phonetics, syntax, vocabulary..... have far to go in the most elementary of emotions. Desire, mutual attraction, fascination and dependence have grown between them, but neither of them knows how to channel any of them properly. That is why the author, in the end, won’t allow Cinderella to marry her Prince...... which is probably also why the author landed himself the Nobel Prize.
