The popular
Savoy Operas, by Gilbert and Sullivan, written between
1875 and 1896, mark the move from operetta to the musical,
and despite the extraordinary development of the latter
genre, the works havent lost their relevance to
the present day. The more well-known works form part
of the Anglo-Saxon heritage, and they are constantly
performed all over the world, appealing to mass audiences
as all great classics. The long-standing popularity of
Gilbert and Sullivan is due to a present-dayness which
hasnt been lost with the passing of time.
The musical The Pirates is, along with The
Mikado - produced by Dagoll Dagom in 1986 - one of
Gilbert and Sullivans most repeated successes. From
its opening in 1880, it has been considered an all-round
model of nonsense theatre, and is closely related to a vein
running through Catalan humour; that of pursuing comedy which
stands apart from those situations it pokes fun at, a surrealist avant
la lettre which establishes, through madcap comedy,
a reality where all is possible. Anything is possible - from
anachronisms, through loopy comedy, the jolly upturning of
established values, to the mickey-taking of the very same
internal laws of comedy - starting with plot development
(although a happy end is always kept) -and a constant search
for creativity without limits, where the ridiculous ceases
to exist. Heroes are anti-heroes, supporting roles are shoved
centre stage, the confrontations and battles kick more dust
than anything or anyone else, and love - a misguided caricature
- incites more riot on riot.
The rediscovery of the non-transcendental, the desire to
have a rip-roaring time whatever the cost, even if means
at ones own expense, doesnt seem such a damnable
thing in this confusing time we live in.
This production won the Spanish General Authors Society
(SGAE) MAX award for Best Musical of
1998.
