OH! ESPANYA
.....
SYNOPSIS
After travelling together around Europe,
and having thoroughly enjoyed the experience, the characters
from Oh Europe! decide to organise, on their own initiative,
another tour. This time the journey is round the various
regions within Spain.
They dont bother with travel agencies and go it alone this
time round. They hire the coach, contribute to a kitty, and between
themselves decide on the route taken and the stopping places. In
this way they form a king of travelling co-operative, self managed
and ever so slightly utopian in nature, which evolves throughout
the series, in the light of organisational difficulties. Whereas
at the beginning an attempt at show-of-the-hand decision
making is made, difficulties arise in the simplest of decisions
such as where to stop, where to sleep, or even what time they have
a sandwich giving rise to the necessity for one person to dictate
such matters. Soon enough an opposition party forms and accusations,
including abuse of power and even corruption between the elected
leader and his friends. During the journey moments of heightened
tension occur, coups are tried out, secret negotiations, pacts,
and betrayals. What are depicted and satirised, in effect, are
the different social, political, and economical goings-on that
characterise the country, all within the microcosm which is the
coach.
THE AUTONOMOUS REGIONS
Each episode is dedicated to one of Spains
autonomous regions, where the adventures of the characters
are closely connected to the character of the different regions inhabitants,
history, language, culture, or customs. Each episode includes
special guest appearances by actors from the different regions
visited.
NUMBER OF EPISODES AND DURATION
OH, ESPANYA! runs for 18 episodes,
each episode lasting 30 minutes, accounting for one episode
per region plus an introductory episode. At one stage there
also existed the possibility of dedicating more than one
episode to the more geographically extensive regions such
as Andalusia or Castilla-Leon as well as the possibility
of political outsiders such as Andorra or Gibraltar,
in the event of extending the series to 26 episodes.
AN ON-SET JOURNEY
In the same way as OH, EUROPE! ,
this is a set-based series. Using the resources
of TV, the convention of set-created natural settings
of the different regions of Spain is established.
MUSIC
Each episode has a video-clip style musical
insertion of about two minutes, reflecting the region visited:
a standard musical melody which is arranged according to
a musical style characteristic of the region visited (examples:
Aragon, La Jota, Valencia, La Albà,
Mallorca , a summer hit, .....) Of course, the
lyrics are different for each episode.
IRONY AND COMPASSION
Each episode contains an ironic and at
the same time amiable and imaginative treatment of the region
visited, as was attempted in OH, EUROPE!. The human
team which was involved in the latter series is largely
one and the same.
A MESSAGE OF TOLERANCE
Ultimately the message to the viewer is
one of tolerance, respect and trust between the various regions
and the people who inhabit them, without of course forgetting
that the main objective is entertainment.
